Haryana CM Manohar Khattar meets industrialists as govt gets ready for Global City work

April 2nd, 2022

GURUGRAM: Chief minister Manohar Khattar on Friday held a roundtable discussion with industrialists on the proposed Global City project, which is to be developed on more than 1,000 acres of land near Manesar, a plot that was originally allotted to the Reliance SEZ that didn’t take off. Another meeting will be called next month, after which an action plan on the project is expected to be rolled out as the government prepares for a big-ticket launch.
Addressing the media afterwards, the CM said that the meeting was the initial step towards understanding stakeholders’ demands to achieve the government’s vision of a new business district.

“On Friday, we had a discussion with an open mind. Many good suggestions were given, based on which we will create a plan to develop Global City. There will be another meeting after a month. All stakeholders will be called to take that work forward, and a world-class Global City will be developed here,” Khattar said. The Global City will be developed over 1,000 acres of land adjoining the Dwarka Expressway. Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) has already acquired land in sectors 36, 36B, 37 and 37B along the Dwarka Expressway.

HSIIDC officials noted that the government will soon be constituting an advisory council to coordinate and plan the ambitious project, which has been hanging fire for over six years now. “We’ll soon constitute an advisory council that will assimilate the suggestions and demands of all stakeholders such as residents, industrialists and experts. The council will also look into effective planning and implementation of the project,” said an HSIIDC official.

The city will have world-class civic infrastructures such as wide roads, hospitals, schools, and other civic amenities like retail stores and shopping complexes.

In 2016, the then government had announced that Global City would be developed by a Japanese firm and Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC) after Reliance Industries backed off in 2014 from the 2006 agreement for the development of a special economic zone. But that plan, too, fell through because of differences between DMICDC and HSIIDC, which owns the land.

Last year, the Global City project was announced again, this time to be spearheaded by HSIIDC itself.

Industrialists say that while the concept is laudable, there remains doubt about its effective implementation.

“The plan is no doubt outstanding, but so are the challenges. The Dwarka Expressway will address connectivity concerns, but other challenges remain. From power infrastructure to the Kherki Daula toll, these issues need to be discussed and timely addressed,” Gurgaon Industrial Association president JN Mangla said.
